Watch video excerpt

For many years DAH Teatar deals with the history of our city using its specific theatre expression. The project from 2006 "The Guide Through the Alternative History of Belgrade" that aroused great interest in the public and media convinced us of the need of our "polis", meaning public and citizens, to through a creative way encounter the history of the city in which they live, and to be part of its transformation. That need to explore the history of one's city was expressed not only in our city, Belgrade, but also elsewhere  resulting in invitations from other cities (Nis, Smederevo etc.) to create a similar project. That indicates to the recognition of an essential need in our society - how to understand and transform historical events from the past that influence our lives.
The project is being realized in collaboration with the theatre fragment from Basel, Berne and Zurich, Switzerland. This represents the continuation of the work between fragment and DAH Theatre which started in 2004, when members of fragment were in International School for Actors and Directors of DAH Theatre. From then on the collaboration was intensified year by year: taking part at the International School and developing theatre projects. The exchange of working strategies, of cultural themes and of aesthetic thoughts is an important enrichment for fragment`s artistic work and development.
As many Swiss citizens the members of fragment live and work in at least two different cities. The German part of Switzerland can easily be considered as one urban region with three centers. Nevertheless Basel, Berne and Zurich have their own culture and live-style. The private life of the inhabitants can be described as infinite little entities hidden behind the walls constituting the structure of the cities. Outdoor performances in the center of Belgrade represent an encounter with a rich public life one can rarely experience in Swiss cities. The materials elaborated for and the experiences made during the performances in the streets of Belgrade will be part of new works in Switzerland.

In the project "In the Search of the City" the main topic are invisible walls in our city, made of hidden histories, and taboos tied to our city. The hidden history of our city manifests itself also trough the lack clear information about what happened at certain places and what was the initial purpose of of certain buildings in the city. That, above all, is in relation with the buildings that still exist and that changed its function and also buildings that existed before and still exist but the memory of them still present.
Through the research of the hidden history of our city and through its presentation through a theatre performance that we perform in the specific places in our city, our idea is to shed light to "hidden walls" or hidden history, to make it more transparent and in that way also to transform our city and our co-citizens.
Our wish with this performance is to regain the broken tread of memory and the broken connections with the world.
The Hero of All Wars, Marco Polo, Heidi and many other characters from this performance will deconstruct the past on the ruins of the library in that way evoking the life and constructing a possible future.
The ruins also carry aspect-beside the destructive, ruins also present a memory, the essence of an idea, an imaginary space for projecting visions and desires.
"If there is anything more beautiful than a beautiful thing it is its ruin"- said the famous French painter Pierre Puvis de Chavvannes.

The project is realized with the support of the Department for Culture of the City of Belgrade, the Swiss foundation Pro Helvetia and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia.
